A 58-year-old hunter faces charges after accidentally shooting and killing his 35-year-old hunting partner while mistaking him for a wild boar in northeastern Poland.

On August 31, 2024, around 10 p.m., a tragic incident occurred near Giby in Podlaskie Voivodeship during a hunt. A 58-year-old hunter mistakenly shot his 35-year-old colleague, believing he was a wild boar. The victim later succumbed to his injuries in the hospital.
Prosecutor’s Decision
On September 1, Deputy Prosecutor Wojciech Piktel of Suwałki informed the Polish Press Agency that the 58-year-old had been charged. “The prosecutor, after analyzing the evidence, concluded that the defendant did not intend to deprive the victim of his life, which is why he accepted the qualification of manslaughter.” According to Piktel, the indictment has already been filed with the Sejny Regional Court, where the defendant faces up to five years in prison. The prosecutor has also imposed a potential 60,000 złoty property bond on the defendant, along with restrictions on leaving the country and police surveillance.
Pre-Trial Measures
Before prosecutors filed the charges, they had already instituted pre-trial measures against the 58-year-old, including a property bond of 60,000 złoty, prohibition of leaving the country, and police supervision. The accused is required to present himself at the police station five times a week.
