Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda’s presidential jet entered a holding pattern over Vilnius for half an hour on Tuesday due to an unidentified drone spotted near the international airport.
Drone Detected Near Airport
President Nausėda was returning from a Finland visit on September 2nd when air traffic controllers reported a drone in the vicinity of Vilnius International Airport. The Lithuanian presidential representative Tomas Berzinskas explained that the pilot received information about the drone during the approach to Vilnius.
Temporary Suspension of Air Traffic
Due to the potential safety hazard, authorities decided to temporarily halt air traffic, which was quickly resumed after confirming that there was no actual threat. The Lithuanian Military Police are working to identify the unit behind the interruption of the President of Lithuania’s planned landing.
Similar Incident in August
A similar incident occurred at the end of August when another drone was spotted near Vilnius. Initial suspicions pointed to a drone belonging to one of Lithuania’s security companies, although representatives of the company denied this.
