Poland Violates International Aarhus Convention Concerning Forest Management

The Committee on Compliance with the Aarhus Convention has found that Poland restricts citizens’ rights to challenge forest management plans.

Fundamental Rights Under Threat

The Committee confirmed that Poland is violating the international Aarhus Convention, which it ratified over 20 years ago, by denying citizens the right to challenge state forest management plans.

This decision resulted from a complaint submitted by environmental NGOs seven years ago, following public protests against the clear-cutting in Białowieża Forest.

Government Implementation Lagging

The Ministry of Climate and Environment prepared a legislative amendment last year, but it has not yet been implemented, frustrating NGOs and citizens alike.

Impact on Forest Preservation

Environmentalists argue that without the ability to challenge these plans through the legal system, citizens have no meaningful way to protect Poland’s forests.
