Polls Suggest Poles More Open to Ukrainian EU Membership Than Most Europeans

70% of Poles support EU enlargement, with 51% backing Ukrainian membership, compared to a European average of 52%.

A Eurobarometer study shows that 70% of Poles are in favor of European Union expansion, with only 23% opposed and 7% undecided. This is significantly higher than the EU-wide average of 56% in favor of enlargement.

Candidate Countries Support

When specifically asked about the nine countries currently holding candidate status to join the EU, Poland’s support for Ukrainian membership (51%) was just 1% below the EU average (52%). Support for Bosnia and Herzegovina and North Macedonia was notably higher for Poles (50% compared to the EU average of 48%).

Largest Opponents to EU Enlargement

The study also revealed that the Czechs, Austrians, and French were the most resistant to new EU members, with 53%, 50%, and 48% respectively opposed to enlargement.
