Prosecutor General Announces Immunity Revocation for Braun Over Auschwitz Lie Scandal

Prosecutors plan to file a request to revoke the parliamentary immunity of Grzegorz Braun, a PiS MP, over his controversial claim that gas chambers in Auschwitz were a “hoax.”

Immunity Revocation Request Proceeding

The public prosecutor’s office has decided to take action against Braun, who during a radio interview denied the existence of German crimes in WWII and stated that gas chambers in Auschwitz were a “fake.” The interview was abruptly ended by the host after Braun made the comments.

Comment from the Prosecutor General

Prosecutor General Waldemar Żurek announced that the request to revoke Braun’s immunity would be submitted to the National Prosecutor’s Office on September 3, then to the European Parliament. Żurek emphasized the urgency of the situation, saying, “We will not remain passive while someone attempts to undermine the tragic history of the Polish nation.”

Court Proceedings

In July, the Regional Prosecutor’s Office in Warsaw filed an indictment against Grzegorz Braun. The prosecution alleges that he committed various actions, including shutting off Hanukkah candles with a fire extinguisher in the Sejm in 2023, disrupting the work of the Institute of Cardiology, and blocking Holocaust-related events.
