U.S. President Donald Trump announced plans for a phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, which would occur on September 4th. The call is part of Trump’s efforts to discuss the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and his plans to end what he calls “the stupid war.”
Trump to Discuss Ukraine Conflict with Zelensky
During a White House press conference on Wednesday, Trump confirmed that he would be speaking with Zelensky, after originally meeting with Karol Nawrocki in the Oval Office. The call is expected to address the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, with Trump stating, “I will talk to him in the next few days and then I will basically know what we’re doing.”
Trump Discusses Future Meetings with Putin
During the press briefing, Trump also revealed his intention to speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin, stating, “I want to end this stupid war.” He added that he believes “there are many good things about our relationship,” but reiterated his position that the conflict between Russia and Ukraine is “not good for anybody.”
Trump Criticizes Past Administration on Ukraine Aid
In response to questions about the ongoing war, Trump criticized his predecessor, Joe Biden, for his role in the conflict. He accused Biden of having “some involvement” in the escalation of the war and criticized him for releasing $350 million in aid to Ukraine. Trump also suggested that the losses sustained by both sides are greater than those seen in World War II.
Trump’s Confidence in Ending Seven Wars
Trump also highlighted his record of ending seven wars, claiming, “I have tremendous power to end things.” When asked about his message for Putin, Trump responded, “He knows my position and will make a decision one way or another. Whatever decision he makes, we’ll be happy or unhappy, and if we’re unhappy, you’ll see what happens.”
