Belarusian KGB Arrests Polish National—Foreign Ministry Calls it Provocation

Poland’s Foreign Ministry brands the arrest of a Polish citizen on espionage charges by Belarus’ KGB as a provocation, while police are investigating claims the detainee may be a Catholic priest involved in gathering military intelligence.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs Comment

Polish diplomat Paweł Wroński said his ministry considers the arrest of the Polish citizen by the Belarus KGB a deliberate provocation. “We will take any diplomatic and legal action necessary to protect and assist our arrested citizen,” he added.

Special Services Response

The spokesman for the special services commented on the matter, saying, “This is yet another provocation from the Lukashenko regime aimed at our country. We have Polish prisoners in Belarusian prisons already, including Andrzej Poczobut and others.”

Belarusian Media on the Arrest

A recent report from News.by explains that during the arrest, several currencies were found in the Polish national’s belongings, including dollars, euros, and rubles. They also note that there was a SIM card which was reported to be registered under a different person’s information. The article also states that the arrested individual had offered communication with a Belarusian citizen regarding work with Polish special services for gathering and sharing classified information about the command headquarters and counterintelligence officers.

Details of the Arrest

The Belarusian military reported on Thursday that they had detained a 27-year-old Polish national in the Lepel region on suspicion of espionage related to the Zapad-2025 military maneuvers. The accused carried counterfeit documents regarding the maneuvers, and it is alleged that he is potentially a Catholic priest working undercover for Poland’s Agencja Bezpieczeństwa Wewnętrznego.
