Poland’s State Anti-Pedophilia Commission Chair Resigns Amid Investigation

Polish Parliament Speaker Szymon Hołownia announced that Karolina Bućko, chair of the State Pedophilia Commission, has resigned, citing investigation findings into potential misconduct.

Resignation Triggered by Investigation Findings

The resignation comes after the Supreme Chamber of Audit (NIK) revealed that the chair had awarded herself an unauthorized bonus while serving in her position.

Mobbing Complaints Prompted Leadership Change

In July 2023, the chair recommended the removal of two commission members following allegations of mobbing within the commission. Both members, Barbara Chrobak and Hanna Elżanowska, were later removed by the Parliament.

Commission Background and Overview

The State Pedophilia Commission was established by the Sejm on July 24, 2020, focusing on investigating previously time-barred cases of pedophilia and maintaining a registry of offenders. Earlier in 2023, the commission initiated a hearing process for then-Parliament Speaker Szymon Hołowni to address the allegations.
