Doctors in India performed a rare operation on a 20-day-old baby girl who had twins developing inside her body.
Uneven Belly and Feeding Difficulty
Doctors at Fortis Memorial Research Institute in Gurgaon, India were called by the child’s parents who were concerned by her distended belly and difficulty feeding.
Discovery and Immediate Concerns
The doctors discovered two undeveloped foeti in the child’s stomach, which are referred to as “parasitic twins” in media reports. The operation was particularly challenging because the child was dehydrated and malnourished.
Risk and Successful Operation
The child’s condition prevented immediate surgery, so the operation was postponed for two days. A team of 10 to 15 doctors participated, and the surgery lasted about two hours.
