Polish train to Warsaw arrives without wagons due to wayward elk

A brawny elk named Emil disrupted overnight Austrian train traffic, causing a Polish InterCity (IC) train bound for Warsaw to depart without several of its wagons last Sunday.

Elk causing delays

The InterCity (IC) Chopin train from Munich was scheduled to arrive at Warsaw Central Station at 9:08 A.M. on Sunday, September 7. This however occurred in the company of several missing wagons. State railway company PKP explained via social media that wagons had to be left in Austria, where the train passed through the previous evening. “Łoś Emil decided to spend the night on the tracks near St. Pölten,” they informed.

Train compartment issues

The elk’s presence disrupted the train’s journey and left a group of wagons intended to join the IC Chopin in transit unable to do so. The rest of the train’s compartment, however, continued its journey to Warsaw without waiting for the missing equipment.

Elk’s legendary journey

Łoś Emil sparked online celebrity a few weeks earlier when spotted in Austria and Germany. Local news outlets reported however that he never made it to the Austrian capital and that no report of his whereabouts reached authorities. The elk was sighted near St. Pölten, approximately 60 km from Vienna. Emil is believed to have begun his journey in Poland, traveled through the Czech Republic, spending some time in the Moravian-Silesian region before being seen in Slovakia.
