Is the EU-Mercosur Pact Really Beneficial? Polish Farmers Fear an Economic Showdown

The EU-Mercosur pact will have a negative impact on the Polish farm sector, sparking a rational EU hardline stance, and reigniting the Mercosur trade conflict for Polish farmers.

Piotrowski’s Warning

EU Commissioner Mateusz Piotrowski argues the EU-Mercosur pact is disadvantageous to Poland and insists on a rational hardline stance as countries like Germany are setting up manufacturing blocs with South American countries, presenting a new world order focused on greater competition and bilateral deals.

German Big Business in Top Position

“Our agriculture ministry is allegedly working on a strategy that is designed to open markets for Mercosur countries,” according to Piotrowski, “but this could mean our Polish farming industry may crumble under the economic pressure from Germany, helping them to gain a stronger position in international trade.”

Risk of Economic Ruin

In the future, the agreement could lead to a food crisis, where countries like Poland could be utterly defeated by not just Brazil and the EU, but also by an expected wave of Argentina’s beef. This will have a profound negative impact on the lives of thousands of Polish farmers.
