Chaotic Protests and Clashes with Police
Protesters took to the streets of Kathmandu demanding the government lift a ban on social media and combat corruption. “Stop the social media ban,” “Stop corruption, not social media,” the demonstrators chanted. Police used tear gas and water cannons, but some reports indicated officers started shooting at the protesters. At least 19 people have been confirmed dead in the clashes.
Hundreds Injured
Over 145 people were injured, including 28 police officers. Many of the victims suffered serious injuries to their heads and chests. A doctor reported, “Many of the injured appear to have been shot in the head and chest.”
UN Human Rights Office Statement
The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights expressed shock at the killings of protesters, saying, “We are appalled by the killings and injuries of protesters in Nepal and urge a swift and transparent investigation.”
