Poland to Fall Back to Winter Time, But Experts Question Its Necessity

Poland will switch to winter time on October 27th, but medical professionals argue the bi-annual time change is a health risk.

When Does the Time Change Happen?

The switch from summer to winter time occurs on October 27th, at 3:00 AM shifting to 2:00 AM. This means an extra hour of sleep. The time change will occur again in March when we’ll transition back to summer time.

Regulation Rationale

The change is regulated by the European Union Directive from 2001, which applies not only to Poland but to all EU countries. In Poland, it is also regulated by the Regulation of the Council of Ministers from March 4th, 2022, which will remain in effect until 2026.

Health Implications

Health-wise, the time change has both positive and negative effects, according to Dr. Marcin Król. He explained, “Around half of us have some form of sleep disorder.” The additional change in schedule, he continued, disrupts our nightly routines and causes health issues as our bodies have to adjust to the change.
