The Polish Bishops’ Conference claimed health education promotes “gender concepts of sexuality,” while teachers argue the program simply aims to provide factual information and protect students.
Polish Bishops Criticize Health Education Program
The conference expressed concern that important aspects of health education focus on “so-called sexual health,” which aims to “completely change the perception of family and love.” They argue that the content is detached from the context of marriage and family, stating that marriage is nearly absent from the topics discussed, while family – defined as mother, father, and children – is completely marginalized.
Teachers Criticize Bishops’ Allegations
Teachers through the “I, Teacher” Foundation argue that the Bishops’ comments undermine their trust and imply they are involved in ideological activities contrary to family values. They maintain that the health education curriculum is based on contemporary scientific knowledge and adapted to the appropriate learning level of students.
Health Education in Polish Schools
Health education is an optional subject introduced from the fourth grade of primary school and in secondary schools. The course will not be graded and will not affect student promotion.
What Students Will Learn About Sexual Health
Students will learn about the structure of reproductive organs and will be introduced to the concept of bodily autonomy, particularly important for protecting children and later adults from abuse. The information is tailored to the appropriate age level and covers topics such as boundaries in intimate relationships, protecting the youngest, and where to seek help, including information about internet dangers.
