Poland’s Saab 340 AEW: A Small but Mighty Asset in the Sky

Thousands tracked the THUNER1 plane as it monitored Russian drones over Poland, showcasing the importance of this smaller radar aircraft in modern defense systems.

Small Yet Effective: Poland’s Saab 340 AEW

The Saab 340 AEW, operating under the codename THUNER1, is a compact yet capable aircraft designed for aerial surveillance. Despite its size, it plays a vital role in detecting aerial threats, making it an essential asset for Poland’s defense system.

Part of Poland’s Growing Military Presence

The THUNER1 was one of two used Saab 340 AEW aircraft purchased from Sweden in 2023 for $52 million. While not the newest, these aircraft have gained significant value following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, providing crucial radar capabilities for Poland’s airspace protection.

Operational Limitations and Future Plans

Despite their utility, the Saab 340s have certain limitations, such as their smaller size, turbofan engines, and shorter operating range due to their inability to refuel in flight. Poland is actively considering upgrading its fleet with more advanced GlobalEye models from Sweden, pending the availability of funding from the European Union.
