Germany pledges additional support for Poland, extending and intensifying air surveillance following Russian drone incursions into Polish territory.
Increased Air Patrols
Germany will extend and expand its air surveillance over Poland, according to a statement from German Defence Minister’s office, citing Der Spiegel. Two Eurofighter jets stationed at Rostock-Laage airbase will also participate in monitoring Poland’s airspace, known as “Air Policing” in NATO terminology. The mission is set to last until the end of the year, previously scheduled to end by the end of September.
Enhanced Rapid Response
Poland’s Eastern flank will now have air surveillance patrols to ensure NATO air space integrity and enable a comprehensive and flexible response to potential threats. In case of suspicions, German Eurofighter jets will launch to identify unknown or suspicious aircraft and, if necessary, intercept them.
Patriot Missiles and Ukrainian Support
The German army currently has two Patriot air defense systems deployed at Rzeszów airbase. This military supply continues to pass through Poland, as the majority of Western arms supplies for Ukraine go through the country. The contingent comprises approximately 200 soldiers and equipment vehicles.
Intensified Support for Ukraine
German Chancellor announced accelerated support for Ukraine and strive within the European Union for a “rapid adoption of the decisive 19th package of sanctions.” The statement was made by government spokesperson Stefan Kornelius.
