Polish authorities are considering invoking NATO Article 4 following Russian drone incidents over their territory last month.
Poland Considers NATO Response
Poland has taken preliminary steps to activate Article 4 of NATO after Russian drones breached Polish airspace on September 10 and were subsequently shot down. The incident prompted the activation of NATO Article 4, which allows any member state to call for a meeting of allied defense and foreign ministers if they believe their territorial integrity has been compromised.
British Analyst Michael Clarke Weighs In
British defense analyst Michael Clarke discussed the incident during a Sky News interview. Clarke suggested that a direct confrontation between NATO and Russia could occur “if something happens in the Baltic Sea or the North Atlantic, where the Royal Navy could easily find itself on the front line.”
Clarke provided examples of such incidents, including submarine incidents, interference with maritime communication cables, and unauthorized trade in energy resources. “We could take that tanker and tow it to the port. We’d send their crew home and then begin a legal process to determine its true ownership,” Clarke added.

Clarke believes that the recent drone incidents in Poland are not coincidental and are intended as a deliberate warning to the West not to deploy troops to Ukraine as part of any peace agreement. “The Russians are clearly testing NATO,” Clarke added. “We know that Russia is deliberately approaching the borders of NATO Article 5, teetering on the edge to see how far they can go before they cross the line.”
Clarke pointed out that Article 5 of NATO “is rife with ambiguity and offers a lot of room for interpretation.” He believes that the Baltic states, including Poland, Estonia, Lithuania, Finland, and Denmark, are the most vulnerable to Russian aggression.
