Polish priest Piotr Tomaszewski, detained by Belarus’ KGB, has been released as Belarusian President Lukashenko pardons 52 political prisoners following meetings with a US delegation.

Piotr Tomaszewski, a 27-year-old Polish priest, was detained on a parking lot in Lepel by Belarus’ KGB on suspicion of espionage. They claimed he possessed classified documents regarding the Zapad-2025 military maneuvers. Tomaszewski, a member of the Kraków Carmelite congregation, defended a master’s thesis in July about the Ulm family, who helped Jews during Nazi occupation.

Premier Donald Tusk, along with other Polish officials including Jacek Dobrzyński, Paweł Wroński, and Marcin Bosacki, denounced the detention as another provocation by Belarusian regime of Alexander Lukashenko.

Belarusian dictator Alexander Lukashenko pardoned 52 political prisoners, including two Poles, following his meeting with a U.S. delegation, led by John Coale. Among the released prisoners are Latvian, German, French, and British citizens, as well as prominent Belarusian opposition figures Vladimir Mackiewicz, Mikola Statkiewicz, and Ihar Losik.
