An innate left the Krzywańc prison on September 12, triggering a manhunt after prison officials noticed his absence 42 minutes later. The inmate, who was serving his sentence in an open facility, had been working outside the penal institution.
Inmate Disappearances from Open Facility
The incident occurred on September 12 when the inmate, who allowed his departure due to the semi-open nature of the facility, left work around 6:35 am. Almost an hour later, around 7:48, officials realized he had not returned.
Manhunt Initiated
Immediately after detecting the disappearance, authorities activated an alarm in the facility and called in the police, fire department, and a thermal imaging camera-equipped vehicle with a tracking dog. The search is currently ongoing in forest complexes and surrounding areas around Krzywańc and Nowogród Bobrzański.
Classification of the Incident
The Regional Service of Prison and Detention Center Administration in Poznan designated this incident as the innate’s “voluntary departure” rather than a prison break, citing that it happened while the inmate was employed outside the facility.
The Service also emphasized that while the law prescribes fines, restricted freedom, or up to two years in prison for such actions, the inmate could also have their employment status revoked and face further punishment from the penitentiary commission.
