NATO is coordinating a military response to the unprecedented Russian drone incursion into Polish airspace, which resulted in the first escalation since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
NATO Military Preparations
In response to the Russian drone attack, NATO is preparing defensive military measures to enhance deterrence posture in the eastern flank of the alliance. The Supreme Allied Commander in Europe, General Alexus Grynkewich, is coordinating the efforts.
Polish Government Response
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated that the attack, involving at least eight attack drones directed towards Poland, could not be considered an accident or mistake. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky labeled the attack “extremely dangerous and intentional.”.
Russia’s Role
Although Polish officials initially expressed uncertainty about Russia’s involvement, Ukrainian officials insisted the attack was intentional. Russian President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, denied any Russian involvement.
Ukrainian Attacks
Simultaneously, Ukraine was targeted by over 400 Iranian-made Shahed drones and more than 40 missiles across 15 provinces. Joe Biden expressed openness to the idea of a mistake in the attack on Poland, but emphasized that regardless of intentions, the situation was not acceptable.
