Poland’s Top Prosecutor Defies Calls to Resign

Poland’s General Prosecutor, Ewa Wrzosek, defended her decision to retain her Supreme Prosecution position, stating “We have the right to.” Talk of splitting the functions of Justice Minister and Prosecutor General continues, despite efforts to align them politically by President Karol Nawrocki.

Fight for Judicial Independence Remains

Former member of the National Council of the Judiciary Waldemar Żurek emphasized the importance of a separate, independent prosecutorial position, free from political interference. He argued that the current state of affairs where the Justice Minister holds prosecutorial power undermines the system’s integrity.

KO’s “100 Concretes” Ignored

The ruling Coalition Obywatelska’s pledge to separate the two roles after winning the parliamentary elections appears to have been forgotten. Despite the partial split in functions from 2010-2016, political interests have since recombined the roles, leading to concerns over judicial independence and competence.
