Ceiling Collapse Evacuates 1,400 at Toruń Shopping Mall

A ceiling collapse in a cinema area at the Toruń Plaza shopping mall led to the evacuation of approximately 1,400 people on Thursday evening.

Initial Ceiling Collapse in Cinema Area

Torun.pl reported that the incident occurred around 18:00 at the shopping mall located on Broniewskiego Street. Fire Department officials indicated that a portion of the suspended ceiling, located where movie theater cash registers are situated, collapsed.

Police and Emergency Response

They further revealed that the detached suspended ceiling damaged the sprinkler system, which is part of the mall’s fire protection system. The spokeswoman for the Toruń Fire Department, Lieutenant Colonel Małgorzata Jarocka-Krzemkowska, provided this information.

City Authorities’ Response

Mayor Paweł Gulewski stated that the situation occurred due to the detachment of a portion of the suspended ceiling inside the building. Authorities conducted a full evacuation of the shopping mall, with no reported injuries and approximately 1,400 people evacuated, according to the mayor’s report.

Governor’s Statement

Kujawsko-Pomorski Governor Michał Sztybel reassured the public, stating there were no injuries following the ceiling collapse in the Cinema City area of Toruń’s Plaza Shopping Mall.
