Polish-born American philanthropist and businessman Tad Taube, who founded the POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews, has passed away.

Tad Taube, who was born in 1931 in Krakow, passed away a few weeks before the start of World War II. He emigrated to the United States with his family. Taube was an American businessman and philanthropist who founded entities such as Taube Philanthropies, Taube Family Foundation, and Taube Foundation for Jewish Life and Culture. He also served as president of the Koret Foundation and president of Woodmont Companies.

The Jewish Historical Institute emphasized on their website that in recognition of his contributions, Tad Taube was awarded the Commander’s Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland in 2004. “He was one of the Founding Contributors to the Museum of the History of Polish Jews, and his foundation provided the greatest financial support for the museum. His life’s mission was to support projects aimed at promoting social and cultural life both in the San Francisco region and in his native Poland,” the Jewish Historical Institute noted.

Museum of the History of Polish Jews POLIN stated that Tad Taube and his foundation played a crucial role in establishing the museum. “It is thanks to their generosity that we were able to build our premises, create the main exhibition ‘1000 Years of Polish Jewry History,’ and establish the Educational Center. His engagement and deep understanding of our mission will remain with us forever. With gratitude and sincere farewell, we bid farewell to a man who will forever be written into the history of Museum POLIN,” they wrote on Facebook.
