Gdańsk Cold Case Solved: Serial Letter Carrier Assassin Sentenced After 28 Years

The brutal killing of Gdańsk letter carrier Piotr Z., who was shot and stuffed into a car trunk in 1997, was solved after 28 years when a 52-year-old man was convicted this month.

Serial attacks on letter carriers

The case went cold in December 1997 but was reopened in 2021 when Gdańsk’s “Archives X” revisited the cold case, linking it to a series of attacks on letter carriers in the early 2000s.

Tragic May 15, 1997 incident

On May 15, 1997, 29-year-old Piotr Z., a letter carrier from Żabiny, Gdańsk, was abducted and killed on his daily postal route. He was shot multiple times and found in the trunk of a car in the Leszczyńskich Street area.

Jarosław W. convicted and sentenced

Following a decade-long investigation, 52-year-old Jarosław W. was arrested in March 2023 in Gdańsk. He had prior convictions related to attacks on letter carriers in 2002-2003. On December 28, 2023, he was sentenced to 15 years in prison and an additional 5 years of restrictions on public freedoms.
