Warsaw Neighborhood Protests Against Parking Spot Liquidation

Residents of Warsaw’s Ursynów district protested on September 18, 19, and 22 against the planned elimination of parking spots due to a new park construction.

Background of the Protest

The protest began on Płaskowickiej Street as residents of Ursynów opposed the planned liquidation of parking spots due to the construction of another section of the park above the Southern Warsaw Bypass tunnel.

Causes of the Controversy

The dispute concerns the reduction of a large number of parking spots, which, according to residents, will worsen daily parking availability in the area. The planned development of the area above the S2 tunnel foresees plantings and greenery instead of the existing parking lot near the Wyżyny housing estate.

Protest Details

The protests, organized by representatives of the “Wyżyny” Housing Cooperative, were announced for September 18, 19, and 22, with each starting at 6:30 PM. The gatherings involved blocking traffic at the roundabout at the intersection of Stryjeńskich, Dereniowej, and Płaskowickiej streets.

Broader Context

The initiative is part of an ongoing months-long dispute over the shape of the linear park above the longest tunnel in the country. At an extraordinary session of the Ursynów district council, numerous residents demanded the maintenance of some parking spots and changes to the project, but achieving a compromise remained unresolved.
