Warsaw’s police chief, Darius Walichnowski, is reportedly set to leave his position amid allegations of being forced out due to his reluctance to politicize the police force.
Reasons Behind Walichnowski’s Departure
According to a police officer who spoke to “Gazeta Wyborcza,” Walichnowski was pushed to leave because he refused to allow the police to be politicized. He allegedly declined to be associated with any political party and did not want to repeat the mistakes of his predecessor, who was seen as being closely aligned with the ruling Law and Justice party.
Conflict with the City Hall and Lack of General Nomination
Radio RMF FM first reported Walichnowski’s resignation, citing a conflict between the Warsaw City Hall and the Warsaw Police Headquarters over the police force’s efforts to address staffing shortages. The force is currently understaffed by over 20%. Additionally, Walichnowski was reportedly disappointed by not receiving a general’s nomination, unlike police commanders in Gdańsk and Opole.
Walichnowski’s Stance on Prohibition
On September 16, Walichnowski attended a Warsaw City Council meeting, where he supported a proposal for a nighttime prohibition on alcohol sales. He cited statistics showing an average of 36 interventions per day between September 1 and 14 regarding intoxicated individuals. However, the proposal was only implemented in the Śródmieście and Praga-Północ districts due to opposition from Civic Platform councilors.
