A 67-year-old man in Poland’s Żuromin County has been charged with killing a dog with an axe after it attacked his pets, and faces up to 5 years in prison.
Incident Details
The incident occurred on September 13 in a village in the Raciąż municipality. The 67-year-old man, riding a bicycle, was caring for two dogs when an Amstaff, owned by a woman, escaped from its yard and approached them.
The dogs began attacking each other, prompting the 67-year-old to hit the Amstaff multiple times with an axe, causing severe head injuries.
Charges and Investigation
The police were called, and a veterinarian confirmed that the dog’s injuries were fatal. The 67-year-old was arrested and charged with animal cruelty, specifically for killing the dog with particular brutality.
This was not the first conflict between the man and the dog’s owner; he had previously threatened to kill the dog if it attacked again.
Legal Consequences
The man faces up to 5 years in prison for his actions. The prosecutor has imposed police supervision as a precautionary measure.
Animal Safety and Legal Obligations
Polish law requires pet owners to secure their properties to prevent pets from posing a threat. However, no circumstances justify violence against animals, and such acts are considered crimes.
