NATO on High Alert: “Gray Zone Between Peace and War”

NATO has launched a new operation, Eastern Sentry, to bolster its eastern flank amid increased Russian drone incursions into Polish and Romanian airspace.

NATO’s Response to Russian Drone Incursions

NATO has initiated a new operation, Eastern Sentry, to enhance its air defense capabilities on its eastern flank. This move comes in response to a surge in Russian drone incursions into the airspace of Poland and Romania, NATO member states.

The operation aims to send a clear signal to both its eastern member states and Russia, demonstrating NATO’s commitment to defending its territory.

The Threat of Russian Drones

Russian drones have been penetrating the airspace of European countries, including Poland and Romania, over the past week. On September 9-10, 21 Russian drones entered Polish airspace, with several being shot down.

Experts warn that using expensive missiles to counter these drones is not a cost-effective solution, as the drones can be purchased for as little as $11,800.

European Defense and the “Wall of Drones”

The concept of a “wall of drones” has been proposed, with the aim of creating a coordinated defense system against Russian drone incursions.

Ukraine’s expertise in countering Russian drones is expected to play a key role in the development of this defense system, with the European Commission announcing a joint project to produce drones worth $6 billion.

NATO’s Strategy and Challenges

NATO’s new operation, Eastern Sentry, will focus on enhancing its air defense capabilities, including the deployment of fighter jets and missile systems.

However, experts warn that NATO still faces significant challenges in countering the threat of Russian drones, including the need for more effective and cost-efficient defense systems.
