The Polish city of Kielce has launched a new initiative to collect textile waste with fioletowe bags, making it easier for residents to segregate their waste.
Innovation in Waste Segregation
Innovation in waste segregation is underway in Poland, particularly with the introduction of new fioletowe bags for textile waste collection in Kielce. As of January 1, textiles have been recognized as a new fraction of municipal waste under the European Parliament and Council Directive (EU) 2018/851 of May 30, 2018.
Challenges in Textile Waste Collection
The segregation of textile waste has proven challenging, especially for elderly individuals, people with disabilities, or those without mobility. In Warsaw, for instance, there are only four Points for Selective Collection of Municipal Waste (PSZOK) and limited mobile collection points.
New Fioletowe Bags for Textile Waste
The commune has introduced fioletowe bags specifically for textile waste, which will be collected directly from households every quarter, similar to large household appliances. Residents can participate in this collection if they pay for waste collection in Kielce, with each household allowed to submit one bag (up to 120 liters) of textiles per quarter.
Elimination of Hazardous Waste Dumps
A total of 100 million PLN from the National Environmental Protection and Water Management Fund will be allocated to eliminate illegal hazardous waste dumps this year. In subsequent years, the funding is expected to be twice as high. The program spans three years and will support 25 local governments.
