Russian Fighter Jets Buzz Baltic Sea Platform, Polish Military Alerted

Two Russian fighter jets performed a low flyby near a Baltic Sea extraction platform, prompting a response from Polish military and border guard units.

The incident was described as “provocative behavior” by Russia. Two Russian Federation Armed Forces fighter jets made a low pass within the vicinity of the Petrobaltic extraction platform.

Polish authorities responsible for security monitored the situation around critical maritime infrastructure, including areas outside Polish territorial waters.

Notification of Polish Military

The Polish military was alerted according to procedure after the incident. The border guard reported that the safety zone around the platform was breached, prompting notification of the Polish Armed Forces and other services.

However, Polish territorial integrity was not compromised, as the jets did not cross state borders, according to a statement by the Maritime Branch of the Border Guard.

Repeated Airspace Violations

This was not an isolated incident. Earlier the same day, Russian MiG-31 jets violated Estonian airspace, lingering for 12 minutes. This marked the fourth such violation of Estonian airspace by Russia this year.

Estonia lodged a protest with a Russian diplomat, and the Estonian Foreign Minister, Margus Tsahkna, characterized the act as “unprecedentedly brazen.”

The EU’s foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, condemned the action and reaffirmed support for bolstering the defense capabilities of member states.
