Three Russian MiG-31 fighter jets entered Estonia’s airspace without permission, staying for 12 minutes, prompting an official protest from Tallinn to Moscow.
According to the Estonian government, three Russian MiG-31 fighter jets flew into the country’s airspace without authorization and remained for a total of 12 minutes. This incident has been described as “unprecedentedly brazen” by Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna.
Estonia’s airspace has been violated by Russia four times this year, which Tsahkna emphasized is “in itself unacceptable.” The minister stressed that in response to increasingly frequent border tests and aggression from Russia, there must be a significant increase in political and economic pressure.
EU Diplomatic Chief’s Statement
The European Union’s diplomatic chief, Kaja Kallas, condemned the violation of Estonia’s airspace by Russian military aircraft, calling it a “very dangerous provocation.” She noted that Russian President Vladimir Putin is testing the West’s determination and that weakness must not be shown.
Kallas also mentioned that this is the third such violation of Union airspace in recent days, referencing previous incidents involving Russian drones in Poland and Romania. She assured Estonia of full solidarity and stated that the EU will continue to support its member states in strengthening their defense capabilities using European resources.
