NATO has deployed British Typhoon fighter jets to Poland and plans to enhance airspace monitoring with Turkish surveillance systems, amid increased security concerns on the alliance’s eastern flank.
Turkish Surveillance Systems
NATO plans to strengthen airspace monitoring on its eastern and southeastern flank with Turkish surveillance systems, according to a report by German news agency DPA cited by Süddeutsche Zeitung.
The systems, known as “Merops,” are designed for installation on helicopters and drones, and can detect hostile objects through clouds and dust.
The systems were first showcased in 2022, and Ukraine will support training for their operation.
British Fighter Jets Deployed
British Typhoon fighter jets were deployed to Poland on Friday, with two jets taking off from RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire to patrol Polish airspace, supported by a RAF Voyager tanker aircraft.
The jets returned to the UK on Saturday morning, according to a report by BBC citing the UK Ministry of Defence.
Drone Incidents
A drone-like object was found in Studzieniec, near Kętrzyn, on Saturday, which police said was similar to those that entered Polish airspace last week.
The object, described as a styrofoam drone, was found in a field about 50 meters from buildings, and it was unclear how long it had been there.
This brings the total number of confirmed drones found to 19, with 17 previously confirmed in the center and east of the country.
