A recent survey conducted by IBRiS for Radio ZET found that nearly half of Poles would not defend their country in the event of war.
Survey Results
The survey, which polled 1,067 individuals, revealed that 31.2% of respondents said they would “rather not” defend Poland, while 17.9% stated they would “definitely not.” In contrast, 44.8% of those surveyed expressed a willingness to defend their country.
Age Group Breakdown
The survey also highlighted a significant disparity in willingness to fight among different age groups. A staggering 69% of Poles aged 18-29 said they would not defend their country, with 64% responding “rather not” and 5% saying “definitely not.”
In contrast, 60% of individuals aged 30-49 expressed a desire to fight, making this the age group with the highest level of willingness to defend Poland.
Expert Insights
Konrad Muzyka, an analyst, suggested that Poland may be at risk of war if NATO’s credibility in deterring Russia wanes. He cited potential scenarios such as the US withdrawing its military presence from Europe or NATO, or Western European countries becoming less engaged in supporting Poland.
International Support
Following a recent attack by Russian drones, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced that several countries, including France, the UK, US, Germany, and others, have offered their support to Poland.
