Warsaw’s President Rafał Trzaskowski withdrew his nighttime alcohol sales ban proposal after a move by Civic Coalition, backed by Donald Tusk, led to its replacement.
Background of the Conflict
Warsaw President Rafał Trzaskowski had proposed a ban on alcohol sales in shops and petrol stations from 11 PM to 6 AM across the city. However, during a city council session on September 18, Trzaskowski withdrew his proposal.
Instead, the council adopted a different proposal submitted by Civic Coalition (KO) members, which limits the ban to Śródmieście and Praga-Północ districts.
Internal Power Play
According to reports, the move was part of an internal power struggle within KO, with Marcin Kierwiński, the Minister of Internal Affairs and Administration, aiming to show Trzaskowski his place.
Arleta Zalewska, a journalist, stated that Kierwiński had received a green light from Donald Tusk for this operation.
Future Plans for Alcohol Sales Ban
Radomir Wit, a TVN24 journalist, reported that KO plans to quickly implement the ban in the two districts and then rapidly extend it to the rest of Warsaw.
