US President Donald Trump said NATO countries should shoot down Russian planes that violate their airspace, but noted it would depend on the circumstances.
Trump’s Statement on Russian Planes
During a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Trump was asked by journalists if NATO countries should shoot down Russian planes that violate their airspace. “Yes,” he replied.
When asked if the US would support such actions, Trump said it would depend on the circumstances.
NATO’s Response to Russian Incursions
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte stated that decisions to engage with intruders are made in real-time, based on available intelligence, and with consideration for the threat posed by the aircraft.
Rutte emphasized that NATO will always respond proportionally and do what is necessary to defend its cities, people, and infrastructure.
Recent Incidents Involving Russian Planes
Three Russian MiG-31 fighter jets recently entered Estonian airspace, staying for about 12 minutes. The planes did not have flight plans, had their transponders turned off, and did not communicate with air traffic control.
The incident was responded to by Finnish and Italian F-35 fighter jets as part of NATO’s Baltic Air Policing mission.
Polish and Ukrainian Leaders’ Stance
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated that Poland will not hesitate to shoot down objects that enter its territory, but will consider the circumstances before taking action.
Ukrainian President Zelensky thanked Trump for his efforts to stop the war and reported that Ukrainian forces had reclaimed 360 kilometers of territory.
