A Polish military expert discusses potential responses to drones appearing over airports, citing minimal reaction time in scenarios like Ukraine’s recent attacks on Russian airfields.
Drone Detection and Response
General Mirosław Bodnar, Inspector of Unmanned Weapon Systems, notes that Poland’s airports are equipped with detection systems, making it unlikely for drones to go unnoticed.
Dr. Michał Piekarski from the University of Wrocław adds that if a drone is detected outside Polish airspace, fighter jets could be deployed to identify and potentially intercept or shoot it down.
Reaction Time and Challenges
Dr. Piekarski emphasizes that time is crucial in responding to drone sightings, especially if launched near airports like Okęcie.
He cites Ukraine’s recent use of drones against Russian airfields, which were launched from short distances, leaving little time for reaction.
Technical Limitations and Solutions
The expert highlights that many counter-drone systems are designed to counter commercial drones using known communication frequencies.
However, drones without communication or using GPS and inertial navigation systems require physical interception, posing significant challenges.
