A Italian warship will escort a humanitarian flotilla to Gaza, following a drone attack on the fleet off the coast of Greece on September 24.
Italy’s Decision
The Italian government has decided to send a warship to escort a flotilla carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza. The flotilla, which includes several Italian ships and parliamentarians, aims to break Israel’s blockade of the Gaza Strip.
Drone Attack
The flotilla was attacked by drones on the night of September 24, off the coast of Greece. At least 10 ships were targeted, with several explosions heard and damage reported, including to a Polish-flagged vessel carrying Polish MP Franciszek Sterczewski.
Humanitarian Effort
The Global Sumud Flotilla, which set off from Barcelona in early September, comprises 51 vessels from several countries, aiming to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza. Israel has previously stated that it will not allow the convoy to enter its territorial waters.
Security Measures
The Italian Minister of Defense, Crosetto, condemned the drone attack and emphasized the need to support initiatives like the flotilla, as long as they are lawful. He announced that the warship will ensure the safety of Italian citizens participating in the aid effort.
