Warsaw’s Grzybowska Street is undergoing a comprehensive reconstruction, with temporary traffic changes starting September 25.
Scope of the Reconstruction
The reconstruction covers a 1.5-kilometer section of Grzybowska Street, from Aleje Jana Pawła II to Siedmiogrodzka. Between Towarowa and Aleje Jana Pawła II, two lanes with one traffic lane each will be created, along with additional turning lanes at intersections. From Towarowa to Karolkowska, a single lane will be built. New sidewalks will be constructed on both sides of the street, and cycling routes will be separated or marked on the roadway. Parking will be reorganized, and new bus stops will be added.
Greening and Safety Improvements
Over 100 trees, 13,000 shrubs, and various perennials and grasses will be planted along the street to enhance user comfort, safety, and the urban microclimate.
Construction Timeline and Traffic Restrictions
Work has already begun, with telecommunication network upgrades at the intersection with Siedmiogrodzka. Starting September 25, underground utility work (heating, electricity, gas, water, and sewage) will commence between Siedmiogrodzka and Towarowa. The new roadway and sidewalks are expected to be completed by the end of the year. The street will be fully closed between Przyokopowa and Karolkowska, as well as on Siedmiogrodzka from Karolkowska to the internal road near Siedmiogrodzka 1 and 1a. Drivers will be diverted via Towarowa, Prosta, and Kasprzaka to Skierniewicka.
Temporary Traffic and Pedestrian Changes
Between Przyokopowa and Towarowa (near the Warsaw Uprising Museum), one-way traffic will be enforced toward Towarowa. Pedestrians will only be able to cross on the museum side, with access to Przyokopowa Street via Prosta. One-way traffic will also be introduced on Karolkowska near the intersection with Grzybowska, allowing only movement toward Wolska. Pedestrians will use a crossing on one side of the intersection.
Additional Restrictions and Public Transport Adjustments
The right lane of Towarowa Street toward Daszyńskiego Roundabout will be closed, and a temporary pedestrian-cycling path will replace a section of the bike lane. One of the bike crossings on Towarowa will also be inaccessible. Bus line 106 will operate via an alternate route: Płocka to Kasprzaka, then Prosta and Towarowa to Grzybowska. Updates on further route and stop changes will be posted on municipal communication channels.
Project Details
The reconstruction is being carried out by the Municipal Development Authority, with Strabag Sp. z o.o. as the contractor. The total cost is 50.8 million złoty, co-financed by the City of Warsaw and developers investing along Grzybowska Street.
