Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski faced backlash after posting a controversial statement on X about covering evacuation costs for citizens, including lawmakers, in war zones.
Sikorski’s Controversial Statement
Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski created a poll on X, stating: “If a Polish citizen, even an MP, repeatedly warned, goes to a war zone, the Polish state should: a) cover evacuation costs; b) recover evacuation costs.”
Opposition MP’s Response
Opposition MP Franek Sterczewski, currently sailing with a flotilla delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza, responded: “As an MP, I have a duty to be where human rights are violated. You too, Radku, helped Ukraine privately, and kudos for that. Poles stand with Palestine. I hope the Polish government will also stand with those ending this genocide, instead of sending them bills.”
Journalist’s Reminder
Journalist Bianka Mikołajewska noted that Sikorski had previously traveled as a war correspondent to Afghanistan in the late 1980s. She added, “Back then, without Twitter, decisions on what actions made sense were not made in Twitter polls…” Sikorski briefly replied, “I did it at my own risk.”
Flotilla’s Progress
Sterczewski reported that the flotilla, carrying aid for Gaza, passed Crete. He stated the night was peaceful, though earlier, drones attacked Polish, Italian, and British vessels. The Global Sumud Flotilla is a civilian initiative involving representatives from over 40 countries, aiming to break Israel’s blockade of Gaza and deliver humanitarian aid.
