The Wrocław District Prosecutor’s Office has closed its investigation into Mateusz Morawiecki’s purchase of land from a parish priest.
Investigation Closed
The Wrocław District Prosecutor’s Office has dropped its investigation into the case involving Mateusz Morawiecki. The priest of the St. Elizabeth’s parish in Wrocław’s Oporów sold two plots of land to the PiS politician in 2002, which were later resold at a higher price. “The actions taken in the case did not provide sufficient data indicating the commission of a prohibited act,” said Karolina Stocka-Mycek, spokesperson for the Wrocław District Prosecutor’s Office.
No Prohibited Act Identified
The parties to the agreement set the payment amount and had full freedom in making decisions. Although the later sale of the plots for a significantly higher amount may raise controversies, it does not affect the legal assessment of the behavior of the parties to the 2002 agreement, Stocka-Mycek explained. The cases regarding the acceptance of material or personal benefits by a public official and exceeding authority to the detriment of public interest have expired, so actions related to them will not be continued.
Amount Paid by Morawiecki and His Wife
In 2022, MEP Dariusz Joński of KO stated that when the parish obtained state-owned land, “a parish was ostensibly created.” He claimed that two applications were submitted under one address to obtain two plots. The land was transferred to the parish in 1999 and sold to the Morawieckis three years later. According to Michał Szczerba, documents were allegedly falsified. He questioned whether Morawiecki, as a local councilor with close ties to the voivode, oversaw the process. Mateusz Morawiecki and his wife Iwana purchased two plots totaling 1,924 m² and nearly 15 hectares for 700,000 zł, though an expert later valued them at 4 million zł (due to planned investments), reported “Gazeta Wyborcza.” Subsequently, journalists calculated that the land could have been worth as much as 70 million zł.
