Tension Eases Between Polish President and Foreign Minister?

Polish President Karol Nawrocki and Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski address strained relations amid public displays of unity.

Nawrocki on Relations with Sikorski

During a visit to New York, President Karol Nawrocki was asked about his relationship with Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski, following media reports of their interactions at the UN. Nawrocki acknowledged differences in their approaches but emphasized their shared responsibility in representing Poland. “We may have our disagreements, but on the international stage, we present a united front,” he stated.

Sikorski’s Response

Foreign Minister Sikorski briefly commented on the situation, describing their dynamic as “one Pole with another abroad.” When asked if relations would improve, he replied, “Hopefully.” Government spokesperson Adam Szłapka expressed optimism, noting recent cooperation in key matters despite earlier communication gaps.

Underlying Conflict

Recent tensions between Nawrocki’s team and the Foreign Ministry surfaced when the president met with U.S. President Joe Biden without an MSZ representative. Sikorski claimed the ministry was excluded, complicating diplomatic efforts, while the presidential office stated that MSZ officials do not always accompany the president abroad. Additional disputes arose over missing notes from Nawrocki’s meetings with Donald Trump and other international leaders.
