A fire in Zabierzów Bocheński, near Krakow, claimed the life of a 57-year-old man, with his wife arrested in connection with the incident.

Firefighting Efforts

The fire broke out in a house in Zabierzów Bocheński (Małopolska region, Wieliczka district) in the early hours of September 23. Thirty-six firefighters and eight emergency vehicles responded to the scene, with rescue operations lasting approximately three hours. The body of 57-year-old Roman S. was found in one of the rooms, already beyond medical help, as reported by the Wieliczka County Fire Department.

Arrest of Wife

Shortly after the fire, police detained Magdalena S., the deceased man’s wife, due to suspicious circumstances surrounding his death. A gasoline canister was found near the victim’s body. Preliminary forensic analysis suggested arson as the cause of the fire, with injuries and evidence of breathing difficulties on the victim’s body, indicating he was alive when the fire started, according to Oliwia Bożek-Michalec, spokesperson for the Krakow District Prosecutor’s Office, cited by TVN24. Unofficial reports suggest Magdalena S. had previously threatened her husband, though he never reported it to authorities.

Arson Charges

On September 24, Magdalena S. was charged with murder by arson. At the request of the Wieliczka District Prosecutor’s Office, a court ordered her pre-trial detention for three months. She faces a potential life sentence.
