Szymon Hołownia, the Speaker of the Sejm, explained his position on the presidential bill

Szymon Hołownia, the Speaker of the Sejm, explained his position on the presidential bill for the Central Communication Port (CPK) to Donald Tusk.

Hołownia defends CPK bill vote

Szymon Hołownia, the Speaker of the Sejm, addressed the vote on the presidential bill for the Central Communication Port (CPK) during a conversation with journalists. He stated that the Infrastructure Committee genuinely wants to work on the bill to identify and address its absurdities. Hołownia clarified these points to Prime Minister Donald Tusk, whose concerns were acknowledged. He emphasized that the discussion did not undermine the coalition or their stance on the bill’s merits, and they parted amicably without any dramatic conclusions.

Criticism of the presidential bill

Hołownia criticized the presidential bill for CPK, stating it contains numerous errors and largely replicates solutions previously proposed by the Law and Justice (PiS) party. He argued that repeatedly advocating the same solutions will not advance the CPK project. However, he cautioned against outright rejecting bills in their first reading, especially those widely discussed in public consultations.

Tusk’s reaction to the vote

Donald Tusk expressed disappointment with the vote, calling it a negative signal from Poland 2050 and Hołownia. He lamented that Hołownia and a significant group of his party’s MPs sided with President Andrzej Duda on the issue, which he deemed detrimental to the future of the CPK project. Tusk emphasized the emotional and political significance of the CPK, which has been a contentious issue.

Sejm’s decision on the CPK bill

On Friday, September 26, the Sejm voted on a Left-wing motion to reject the presidential bill for CPK in its first reading. The vote resulted in 203 in favor, 211 against, and 12 abstentions. The bill was opposed by PiS MPs, one PSL MP (Andrzej Grzyb), nine MPs from the Poland 2050 group (including Hołownia), as well as MPs from the Confederation, Together, Republicans, independent MP Tomasz Rzymkowski, and two MPs from the Confederation of the Polish Crown.
