20-year-old driver fatally hits retired teacher at crosswalk

A 20-year-old Audi driver struck and killed an 80-year-old retired teacher who was crossing a marked pedestrian crossing in Węgrów on Tuesday.

Deadly collision in Węgrów

A tragic accident occurred in Węgrów on Tuesday, September 23, just before 13:00, on Bohaterów Warszawy Street. According to police reports, a 20-year-old driver of an Audi failed to yield to an 80-year-old pedestrian who was crossing a marked pedestrian crossing. Another driver approaching from the opposite direction stopped to yield to the pedestrian, but the 20-year-old resident of Węgrów county did not exercise due caution and hit the 80-year-old woman. Despite attempts at resuscitation, the woman died. The Audi driver was sober, and a blood sample was taken for drug testing. Police confiscated the driver’s license, and the 20-year-old was taken to a police detention center, while the Audi was secured in a police parking lot. Police, supervised by a prosecutor, conducted an investigation and secured evidence at the scene.

Charges and appeal for caution

The 20-year-old faces charges of causing a fatal traffic accident, which carries a penalty of up to 8 years in prison. The prosecutor has imposed police supervision on the man. Authorities urge all road users to exercise caution, follow traffic rules, and be especially vigilant near pedestrian crossings.

Victim and perpetrator

The 20-year-old was a recent school graduate. The 80-year-old victim, Elżbieta, had been retired for about 20 years after a career as a mathematics teacher. She was a well-known and respected figure who had educated generations of students.
