Moldovans vote in parliamentary elections that could determine the country’s geopolitical future.

Historic Stakes

The elections are seen as the most critical in Moldova’s 32-year history, with the outcome likely to decide whether the country aligns with the EU or returns to Russia’s sphere of influence.

Ruling Party’s Struggle

The ruling Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS), founded by President Maia Sandu, faces voter dissatisfaction over economic stagnation. Moldova, reliant on tourism and wine exports, has suffered from the pandemic and the war in Ukraine.

Pro-Russian Opposition

The opposition coalition of socialists, communists, and pro-Russian groups promises cheap Russian gas and neutrality. Moldova’s government and the EU accuse Russia of interfering in the election through disinformation campaigns.

Despite election silence, the Moldovan Orthodox Church distributed pamphlets inciting religious hatred and urging votes for the pro-Russian Patriotic Electoral Bloc. Police seized nearly 200 copies from a secret printing press.

The 101-seat parliament remains uncertain, with polls showing a large undecided bloc and a significant diaspora vote.
