Szymon Hołownia, Poland’s outgoing Speaker of the Sejm, is pursuing the position of UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
Previous political setbacks
Szymon Hołownia, who failed twice in presidential bids and secured just 4.99% in this year’s elections, is now seeking an international role. Under coalition agreements, he was expected to step down as Sejm Speaker in favor of Włodzimierz Czarzasty.
To secure the UNHCR nomination, Hołownia requires support from Polish authorities, including President Andrzej Duda. Reports indicate he has been cultivating ties with key figures like Karol Nawrocki and Jarosław Kaczyński.
The final decision rests with UN Secretary-General António Guterres, with whom Hołownia claims to have a strong relationship.
Humanitarian experience
Hołownia’s background includes founding aid organizations operating in Zambia, Congo, Mauritania, Lebanon, and Bangladesh. He also served as an ambassador for the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.
Party leadership transition
During a recent meeting of Poland 2050’s National Council, Hołownia announced he would not seek re-election as party leader. He emphasized the need for new leadership ahead of the 2027 elections.
“I enjoy finding stronger and wiser people than myself, so I hope my colleagues will choose a leader who can responsibly guide Poland 2050 to victory in 2027,” he stated.
