Prime Minister Donald Tusk said Poland will commission a new training vessel for Szczecin Polytechnic and a flagship sailship for Gdynia University, with a 975‑million‑zloty budget through 2029.
New Vessels for Maritime Education
Tusk revealed plans to construct two ships – a research vessel for the Polish Maritime University in Szczecin and a three‑mast sail training ship for the Gdynia University of Maritime Studies. The initiative is part of a multi‑year programme to build ships for maritime universities between 2025 and 2029.
Budget and Funding Sources
The project will cost nearly one billion zlotys, with the bulk coming from the national budget and part financed through bonds. By 2029, the total earmarked for both vessels is 975 million zlotys.
Replacing Aging Fleets
The research ship for Szczecin will replace the 28‑year‑old “Navigator XXI,” while the new sail training ship will succeed the current “Dar Młodzieży.” The new “Dar Młodzieży” will allow simultaneous training of up to 120 cadets, covering a full year of future captains and officers.
Public Naming Contest
Later the same day, Tusk urged the public to submit name proposals for the new sail ship on the X platform. He cited past names such as “Lwów,” “Dar Pomorza,” and “Dar Młodzieży,” and promised the university would consider all suggestions.
