US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth declared last week that the Department of Defense is finished, unveiled a new name “Department of War,” and outlined sweeping reforms aimed at reshaping the military.
Hegseth Declares “No Time for Games”
During a briefing in Quantico, Virginia, Hegseth cautioned that the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force must cut the “games” of politics and focus on readiness. He pledged the Department of War’s first mission is “war, fight, prepare for war, and prepare for victory.” He said theU.S. will use “violence, precision, and a hyphenating force” against any foolish adversaries.
Reveals New Name, Expands Force
Hegseth announced the intent to rename the defense agency “Department of War,” a change that Congress must still approve. He called for increased soldiers, ammo, aircraft, Patriot missiles, submarines, and B‑21 bombers. He urged greater innovation and more artificial intelligence across the defense industrial base and to bring key components back to the U.S. country.
Criticises Politically‑Driven Leadership
The Secretary said the Army had been misled by “stupid, careless politicians,” resulting in promotions based on race, gender parity, or “first times.” He called for a return to merit‑based leadership and dismissed Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion programs, climate‑change cults, and gender‑related obfuscation as “dead ends.”
Uniform Standards Must Be Uniform
Hegseth warned that anyone in his forces must meet strict, gender‑neutral fitness and physical standards. He said unfit or overweight individuals ought not serve or should consider changing jobs. He criticised “recreational” hair styles, beards, and long hair as unprofessional, urging soldiers who want beards to join special forces and to shave otherwise.
Addressing “Toxic Leadership” Practices
The Secretary stated the Department would review definitions of “toxic leadership,” bullying, and harassment to enforce standards without fear of retaliation. He insisted that any kind of harassment would be weaponised against the wrong end but that no department should act as civilians and return to simple command and control.
