Poland seeks clarity on the 2023 killing of volunteer Damian Soból in Gaza, blocked by Israel and U.S. refusal to share evidence.
Unresolved Questions After 1.5 Years
Despite 18 months since Israeli forces killed 36-year-old Polish volunteer Damian Soból in Gaza, critical questions remain unanswered. The investigation, led by Poland’s Przemyśl District Prosecutor’s Office, has stalled due to Israel and the U.S. refusing to cooperate or provide legal assistance and evidence.
In June 2024, Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski appealed to the Swiss-based International Humanitarian Fact-Finding Commission, which completed a report—never publicly released.
Government Documents Withheld
Poland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MSZ) has refused to disclose either the Swiss report or a December 2024 government position on the case. When asked, MSZ confirmed possession of both documents, calling them public information, but invoked diplomatic secrecy to block disclosure.
The ministry cited exceptions for information that could “harm Poland’s foreign policy or international reputation.”
Humanitarian Convoy Attacked
In April 2023, Israeli forces struck a World Central Kitchen convoy in Gaza, killing seven volunteers, including Soból. The convoy, clearly marked with the organization’s logo, had received Israeli approval for its route. Medical sources confirm participants wore bulletproof vests with the group’s insignia.
Among the victims were citizens of Australia, the U.K., and a dual U.S.-Canadian national, as well as a Palestinian.
