Wizz Air flight makes emergency return to Warsaw after technical fault

A Wizz Air Airbus A321neo flying from Warsaw to Barcelona was forced to turn back and land safely at Chopin Airport on Tuesday.

Incident details

A Wizz Air aircraft en route to Barcelona had to return to Warsaw Chopin Airport before 6:00 AM on Tuesday, September 30. The Airbus A321neo was carrying 150 passengers, all of whom landed safely.

The emergency landing was triggered by a technical malfunction, according to RMF FM. The airport briefly activated the lowest alert level, known as “local readiness,” before canceling the procedure before 7:00 AM.

Understanding alert levels

Under a 2022 regulation by the Ministry of Infrastructure, “local readiness” is declared when ensuring safety for an aircraft, vehicle, structure, or person in its vicinity—without requiring immediate assistance. Higher alert levels include “full readiness” (for imminent serious danger) and “aviation accident” (for incidents within the airport’s operational area).
